A recent analysis conducted among 763 individuals from 61 countries reveals the concrete challenges they face daily. The findings show that the difficulties are not limited to sight but extend to often overlooked emotional, social, and practical aspects.

Participants highlighted the major impact of vision loss on their emotional well-being. Many describe a loss of self-confidence, increased fatigue, and feelings of anxiety or sadness. These psychological issues are partly explained by the constant effort required to compensate for the disability, which can be mentally and physically exhausting. Daily activities, such as moving around, cooking, or recognizing faces, become sources of stress and require more time and energy.

Leisure, travel, and employment are among the most affected areas. Many struggle to participate in recreational activities, use public transportation, or maintain employment. Reduced mobility and obstacles in public spaces limit their autonomy and access to social life. Relationships with others also suffer, as non-verbal communication, such as facial expressions or gestures, becomes difficult to interpret.

The environment plays a key role in adapting to these challenges. Support from family and loved ones is essential for overcoming daily obstacles. Technologies, such as smartphones or assistive devices, are also valuable tools. They help simplify everyday tasks, access information, and stay connected with the world. However, access to these resources varies depending on the region and socio-economic context.

Cultural differences also influence how individuals experience their disability. In some parts of the world, the focus is on social and family support, while elsewhere, concerns are more centered on mental health or access to care. These variations show that there is no universal solution, but rather a need to tailor responses to the specific needs of each individual and community.

This study highlights the need to rethink support systems. A comprehensive approach, addressing medical, psychological, and environmental aspects, is essential. It should include personalized solutions, such as training in the use of technologies, psychological support, or more accessible urban adaptations. The goal is to enable everyone to live with dignity and autonomy, despite the limitations imposed by vision loss.

Credits

Source Study

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1007/s44402-026-00031-5

Title: Development of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health Core Set for Vision Loss: Insights From the Lived Experience of People With Vision Loss

Journal: Ophthalmic and Physiological Optics

Publisher: Springer Science and Business Media LLC

Authors: Lorenzo Billiet; Hilde P.
